Our Story

Art begins
with earth.

Who we are, why we named ourselves after a pigment, and why clothing.

What is Umber?

We are an art curation studio, focused on storytelling through art.

We tell the stories behind great artworks, through short films and through clothing. We want to teach people something new about art, and give art lovers a way to wear what they love.

Every story is researched properly before we tell it. Every garment is made in small numbered editions. And we spend a lot of time behind the scenes getting both right, because we would rather be slow than careless.

Raw Umber

Earth pigment#523420

The name

Umber is earth.

A natural clay, coloured by iron and manganese, dug from the ground and ground into pigment. Earth colours like it were on cave walls tens of thousands of years before anyone thought to write anything down. Rembrandt shadowed faces with it. Caravaggio built darkness out of it.

It is one of the oldest colours people have ever made art with. That felt like the right name for us.

Our story

There is more to art than meets the eye.

Famously, there is more than meets the eye when it comes to art. Unfortunately, learning about it is often off-putting. Not because the stories behind the work are dull, but because of the way we learn about them.

I'm sorry, but the small paragraph on the wall can sometimes be a little mind-numbing.

I mean, just look at this.

We're here to fix that. We bring those stories back to life.

Why clothing?

Most of the world's great art hangs on walls you'll never stand in front of.

Umber takes it off the wall and back into everyday life, embroidered onto heavyweight garments made to last. Nobody hangs a hoodie in a gallery. You live in it, and the art goes wherever you go.

Meet the founders

Hi, I'm Guy. I'm a university student, juggling my degree with co-founding Umber. I came up with the idea at school in 2021: a mixed-media clothing brand built on art, bringing together my love of art, fashion and video.

Whenever we were set a presentation at school, I'd find a way to turn it into a short documentary, and I noticed my classmates started looking forward to mine. Maybe they liked the more immersive, visual way of telling a story, which for my dyslexic brain was one of the few ways I could really take information in. Or maybe they just wanted a few extra minutes to finish their own.

Either way, it convinced me of two things. The traditional ways of learning about art, reading a book or the placard next to the painting, don't work for everyone. And while what a painting looks like matters, it's the story behind it that brings it to life.

Five years after I first imagined it, I teamed up with Olly to finally make it real.

Making art and music has always been my favourite way to spend time. I really enjoy the process of evolving creativity into something tangible to share with others.

I met Guy at school and we quickly realised that our interests in music, media (and most importantly art) were very similar, leading to the start of our friendship. So five years later, when he pitched the idea for UMBER, I immediately wanted to help out in any way that I could.

We started sitting down together and challenging what a contemporary independent art brand could look like and how we would go about showcasing the stories behind the art that people love. This included hours of throwing ideas back and forth to build something we are really proud of.

UMBER is our way of having fun with storytelling, videos, and clothing. Thanks for being here and checking us out!

Our promise

  • No invented myths.

We are new, and we would rather say so than make up a heritage.

  • Real scarcity.

Every edition is limited, and we'll always show you exactly how many are left. Real numbers, never made-up ones.

  • Every story, researched.

The history behind every piece is checked before we tell it, and published alongside it.
